Compression Therapy

How can compression therapy benefit me?
Compression helps boost blood circulation and maintain healthy blood flow. Compression therapy not only helps manage venous and lymphatic disorders like varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis and lymphedema, but also reduces pain and heaviness in the legs. For those who don’t have circulatory disorders, compression therapy works to energize legs and prevent future vein problems. Compression therapy is also helpful during & after pregnancy, for long periods of immobility during work or travel and for running and sports.
Are compression stockings the same as support stockings?

Even though these terms are often used interchangeably, they’re not the same. Support stockings have mild graduated compression and serve more as a preventive measure. These can be worn by perfectly healthy adults to maintain leg health and reduce the risk of developing vein-related issues. Medical compression stockings on the other hand, are produced under strict medical and technical specifications to provide precise graduated compression. Often prescribed by medical practitioners, they’re used for the treatment of venous and lymphatic disorders.

What are compression levels / classes? Which one do I need?
To put it simply, greater the compression level or class, tighter the fit and pressure. Stockings with low compression levels do not require a prescription and can be worn by anyone who wants to prevent venous disorders and relieve mild symptoms. Compression stockings with higher levels – 23 mmHg to 46 mmHg are generally prescribed by doctors who determine the right level for your needs. Why are compression stockings difficult to wear?
This is because they aren’t like regular socks or stockings. Compression stockings are made differently and are scientifically designed to be tightest at the ankle and decrease in compression further up the leg. This graduated compression makes them slightly more difficult to put on than regular stockings but it’s what also makes them medically useful. There are many useful tips and tricks to put on compression stockings. If you still need some extra help, you can use accessories like the Sigvaris Doff N’ Donner.

Product Information

Which product is right for me?

Make sure you consult your doctor before wearing medical compression stockings.

Measurement & Sizing

How do I know which size is right for me?
Support stocking sizes are based on shoe size. If you know your shoe size, you can refer to the size chart for each product and choose accordingly. Each medical compression garment however, has its own sizing chart depending on its type. These sizes are based on your leg measurements. Always choose the correct size to get the right benefit from your compression garment.
Can’t I just estimate the size for my compression garment? Why do I need to take measurements?
We cannot emphasize the importance of taking the right measurements and selecting the correct size enough! This is vital to get the optimal therapeutic benefits from your compression garment. Wearing the wrong size compression stocking is not just uncomfortable, but can also make a condition worse. But don’t worry. To make sure you find just the right fit for you, Sigvaris has one of the world’s most robust sizing systems. Developed from a database of thousands of body scans, Sigvaris medical sizing charts are the most precise in the industry. Refer to our quick guide on taking measurements and read about all the best practices you can follow.
What is the difference between your regular sizes and PLUS sizes?
Our regular and PLUS sizes both have the same ankle measurements. The PLUS sizes, however, are suitable for those who have a wider calf or thigh circumference. Refer to the size chart of a product for exact measurements and choose accordingly.
What are the things to keep in mind when I take my measurements?
Here are some things you can keep in mind when you take your measurements to determine the right size:

• Take them first thing in the morning. This is the time when there is minimal swelling.
• Stand with your feet placed flat on the floor.
• Allow a friend or family member to take your measurements.
• Take snug measurements against your bare skin without clothes, ensuring that the measuring tape is not too tight or too loose.

We want to make sure you get the maximum benefit from your compression garment – measure accurately for best results!

Garment Care

When and how should I wash my stockings?
Wearing compression stockings daily for maximum benefit means that they also need to be washed after every use. Washing helps return compression garments to their original shape, extending their life and usability. The best way to wash your compression garment gently is to hand wash it in lukewarm water. If you opt to machine wash, make sure you do so on the gentle/delicate cycle with the garment turned inside out. Use a mild detergent to avoid fabric breakdown. Do not use fabric softeners, bleach, or harsh chemicals.
How should I dry my compression stockings?
Get the excess water out of your compression garment by balling it up and squeezing gently. Do not twist. To maintain the quality of the fabric, lay flat to air-dry. Do not hang the garment or dry directly in the sun or dryer. Do not iron.
What if my stockings have loose threads?
A small loose thread should not be an issue. This can happen sometimes due to the production technique and is not a defect. Make sure you do not pull on it as this could damage the elastic fibre that delivers compression. If there are multiple loose threads and your stocking is more than six months old, consider replacing your garment.
How long will my compression stockings last?
If you are using your compression garment daily, it is recommended that you replace them after six months. If your stockings have been stretched and are easier to put on, have tears or holes or if your measurements have changed, you should replace your garment.
